Cooling-rate effects in a model of (ideal?) glass
Using Monte Carlo simulations we study cooling-rate effects in a three-dimensional Ising model with four-spin interactions. During coarsening, this model develops growing energy barriers which at low temperature lead to very slow dynamics. We show that the characteristic zero-temperature length increases very slowly with the inverse cooling rate, similarly to the behaviour of ordinary glasses. ...
متن کاملThe softening of two-dimensional colloidal crystals
According to the Kosterlitz–Thouless–Halperin–Nelson–Young (KTHNY) theory a two-dimensional (2D) crystal melts when bound pairs of dislocations dissociate into single dislocations. The temperature at which dislocation pairs unbind can be identified by means of the Young’s modulus K passing through 16π . In a previous paper (von Grünberg et al 2004 Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 255703) we analysed video-m...
متن کاملTwo for one in a colloidal glass
It is often said that glass is a frozen liquid. In a glass, the molecules are disordered like a liquid, but macroscopically, the sample no longer flows, behaving like a solid. While we can describe what a glass is, we still don’t fully understand the transition to the glassy state [1]. One way to learn about the glass transition is to study model systems. Perhaps the simplest experimental model...
متن کاملActive microrheology in a colloidal glass.
We study the dynamics of a probe particle driven by a constant force through a colloidal glass of hard spheres. This nonequilibrium and anisotropic problem is investigated using a new implementation of the mode-coupling approximation with multiple relaxation channels and Langevin dynamics simulations. A force threshold is found, below which the probe remains localized, while above it the probe ...
متن کاملEffective Temperature in a Colloidal Glass
We study the Brownian motion of particles trapped by optical tweezers inside a colloidal glass (Laponite) during the sol-gel transition. We use two methods based on passive rheology to extract the effective temperature from the fluctuations of the Brownian particles. All of them give a temperature that, within experimental errors, is equal to the heat bath temperature. Several interesting featu...
